Recent advances in the dietary management of chronic renal failure in cats

چکیده
Dietary modification is recognised as a cornerstone in the management of chronic renal failure (CRF), which is a common, generally progressive, condition in the geriatric cat. Key recommendations have included restriction of dietary phosphate and protein; however, there have been few reports of dietary intervention studies in cats with naturally occurring CRF. The study reported here showed that a diet restricted in phosphate and protein, together with oral phosphate binders in some cats, was able to bring about significant reductions in plasma phosphate and parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations in a group of cats with naturally occurring CRF, compared with a group not receiving this regimen. Median survival time in the group receiving dietary management was also significantly greater, and the results suggested that the management regimen might have slowed the progression of CRF.

متن کاملMedical Management of Chronic Kidney Disease in Cats
Despite recent technological advances in dialysis and transplantation, conservative medical management remains the most practical and accessible approach to the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) for most cat owners and veterinarians. When initially presented, many cats with CKD are moderately to severely dehydrated and require rehydration over 24-96 hours to resolve pre-renal azotemia a...
متن کاملALUMINUM TOXICITY: A REVIEW IN RELATION TO CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE PATIENTS M AINTAINED ON REGULAR HEMODIALYSIS
Aluminum is present in very small amounts in living organisms but abundant in the environment. A growing literature links with the biochemistry of aluminum and also with a series of diseases in chronic renal failure patients on treatment with hemodialysis. The initial description of potential aluminum toxicity in renal failure patients relates to description of dialysis encephalopathy syndr...
متن کاملImmune-mediated hemolytic anemia in cats referring to Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Tehran (2006-2007)
Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is characterized by the destruction of erythrocytes or sometimes bone marrow erythroid precursors mediated by immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM), with or without complement (C 3). The main objectives of this study were to assess the laboratory test results of IMHA and to investigate its possible underlying causes in cats referring to the Veterinary Teaching Hosp...
متن کاملComparison of fractional excretion and 24-hour urinary excretion of sodium and potassium in clinically normal cats and cats with induced chronic renal failure.
The influence of induced chronic renal failure on 24-hour urinary excretion and fractional excretion of sodium and potassium was studied in cats. Induction of chronic renal failure significantly increased fractional excretion of potassium (P less than 0.0001) and sodium (P less than 0.05); however, 24-hour urinary excretion of sodium and potassium decreased slightly following induction of chron...
